JACKSON, Wyoming — A grizzly who officials believe was the oldest female reproducing bear in the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem was killed Tuesday when she was struck by a car on a highway near Jackson.

The bear known as Grizzly 399 was killed Tuesday evening after being hit by a car in Wyoming, according to officials.

People from around the world have followed grizzly bear 399 for several decades. At 28 years old, she was the oldest known reproducing female grizzly bear in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem."

Grizzly 399 was believed to be 28 years old and one of the oldest known grizzly bears still reproducing before a car crash killed her.

Grizzly 399 had a yearling cub with her when she was struck by the vehicle. The cub's whereabouts are unknown, but there is no evidence it was involved.
