Junior doctors in India's eastern city of Kolkata called off on Monday a 17-day-old hunger strike launched in protest against the rape and murder of a colleague, they said, in response to an appeal by the victim's parents.

Kolkata: After 17 days of continuous hunger strike, the junior protesting doctors on Monday evening said that following request from RG Kar rape and murder victim’s parents they are withdrawing the hunger strike.

The strike came after doctors demanded justice for a fellow resident doctor who was raped and murdered in Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.
