The junior doctors agitating over the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case in Kolkata on Monday called off their hunger strike after a two-hour-long meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the state secretariat Nabanna.

The Calcutta High Court has stayed the expulsion and suspension of 51 students and doctors from RG Kar Medical College, calling the college council's decisions ineffective until the state government rules on the matter.

Lawyer Arkaprava Sen, who appeared for the suspended junior doctors, said the suspension and expulsion orders were in violation of principles of natural justice

Some of the suspended doctors had approached the HC claiming that the suspension order was passed without giving them a chance to present their side before the inquiry committee.
